Digital Place Making

Placemaking, in essence, is the art of transforming a physical space into a customized, creative installation that addresses specific challenges faced by those who interact with or pass by the location. In our project, we selected a strategic site on the University of Sydney campus and crafted an engaging, interactive fixture featuring proximity sensor-triggered illumination and sound. This captivating installation aims to alleviate stress for university students and uplift their spirits as they journey home, infusing a touch of whimsy and delight into their bustling daily lives.

According to the research, most students tend to seek for some music or social communication to relieve themselves. Besides, simple, gamified, and multi-interactive designs receive more "likes" among students. As a result, music, multi-interact ability, and neat appearance are featured in the project.

"The path" is a series of motion reactive bollard covers, aims to bring students happiness and relaxation during the exam period by providing unpredictable light shows and sound effects. Being set at the main entrance of eastern avenue at University of Sydney Darlington campus. The project is designed to modify a typical facility--the bollards to increase the playability and recreation of a public place, and thus, enrich students’ Uni-life unconsciously.

As the mental health problem among students is becoming increasingly common and taken into concerned even by the university, "The path" is making great effort to help create a mental friendly environment.
